Healthy Volunteers MRI Research Study

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine, are conducting a study on how brain activity changes over time to help improve future brain research and treatments.

Study Background

Scientists are working to better understand how the brain responds and changes within the same person over time.

Brain imaging tools like MRI are often used to study how the brain works, but most research focuses on one-time measurements. Researchers still need to learn more about how consistent these measurements are when the same person is scanned more than once, especially when they are doing tasks or viewing different types of images.

In this study, researchers are looking at how brain activity may change across multiple visits. By collecting this information, they hope to improve how MRI is used in future studies, including research on medications, mental health, and behavior.

Additional Information

This study is being done to understand how reliable brain imaging results are when measuring changes in the same person over time.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18+ years old

Exclusion Criteria:

  • MRI contraindications (claustrophobia, metal in body)
  • Clinically significant head injury or neurological disease
  • History of a neurological or psychiatric disorder that lasted at least 1 year and required treatment

  • Complete a short phone screening
  • Attend 2 or 4 in-person visits at the University of Pennsylvania
  • Fill out a basic questionnaire
  • Complete an MRI scan during each visit
  • During the scan, respond to simple tasks or view images on a screen

Participants will be paid $100 for each scan session and reimbursed for transportation costs. Participants who do not complete their scan will be paid $25/hour. Participants who complete the four-session version of the study will be paid a $400 bonus. Participants who complete the two-session version of the study will be paid a $200 bonus.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
