Healthy Volunteers
Research Study

Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University are studying a new experimental medication that may help people with substance use disorders in the future. While scientists are working to find safe and effective treatments, more research is needed to understand how these medications affect the body and behavior. This study will test whether the medication is safe for healthy adults and examine how it may impact impulsivity.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to better understand how a new experimental medication affects the body and behavior in healthy adults, and to explore ways to improve future treatments for substance use disorders.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults ages 18 to 65
  • In generally good health
  • If female, must either be post-menopausal or surgically sterile
  • Able to attend in-person study visits in Richmond, VA

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Taking medications that may interfere with study participation
  • Currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant soon

Overall Duration:

This study lasts about 8–9 weeks. This includes screening, several in-person visits, 4 weeks of taking the study medication, and follow-up visits after the medication period ends.

In-Lab Activities

  • You will first complete 1 screening visit at the research clinic. During this visit, you will take part in interviews, surveys, and medical testing, including blood draws and urine and breath tests for drugs and alcohol.
  • If you are eligible, you will return for 2 additional visits before starting the study medication. After that, you will attend weekly in-person visits for about 4 weeks while taking the medication. During these visits, you will complete surveys, interviews, and medical tests to check your health and how you are feeling.
  • You will also have one longer, full-day visit at the end of the medication period. After that, you will complete 2 follow-up visits, about 1 and 2 weeks later.
  • Most activities will happen in person at the clinic, but some questionnaires or tasks may be completed electronically.
  • The study will collect information from your surveys, medical tests, and lab results to understand how the medication affects your body and behavior.

At-Home Activities

  • While taking the study medication, you will complete brief daily phone check-ins for about 4 weeks. These check-ins may include answering questions about how you feel and any side effects you may have.
  • Some surveys or tasks may also be completed online from home. These are usually short and easy to complete. No video or audio recordings are taken at home unless clearly explained to you in advance.

Participants are financially compensated at all in-person study visits. If you are eligible, the research team will review compensation information with you.

Snacks are provided during longer in-person visits, and participants are supported by the research team throughout the study to help make visits as comfortable and convenient as possible.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
