Sleep & Aging
Research Study

Researchers at Stanford Medicine are conducting a study on how brain activity during sleep may be linked to changes in memory as people age. This research aims to better understand early signs of conditions like Alzheimer’s Disease and support future prevention tools.

Additional Information

This study is being done to better understand how sleep and brain activity are connected to memory changes. Researchers hope to find simple and non-invasive ways to detect early signs of brain aging.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age 65-90

  • Generally healthy

  • Memory concerns

  • Overall Duration
This study lasts up to about 4 months and includes one virtual visit and up to 5 in-person visits.

    In-Lab Activities

Participants will visit the Stanford campus up to 5 times.

    • Virtual visit
You will complete a 45 minute online session to learn about the study and give consent.
    • Visit 1: Sleep study (overnight)
You will stay overnight at a sleep center. A soft cap with small sensors will be placed on your head to measure brain activity while you sleep. This is safe and non-invasive. You may also wear a watch that tracks your movement during sleep.
    • Visit 2: Memory and thinking tests
You will complete simple tasks that test memory, language, and thinking skills. You will also have an MRI scan, which takes pictures of your brain using a strong magnet.
    • Visits 3 and 4: Brain imaging scans
You will complete two PET scans on separate days. These scans look at certain proteins in the brain that are linked to aging and memory changes. A small amount of tracer is used for imaging.
    • Visit 5: Daytime brain activity recording
You will wear a cap with sensors again while completing short computer tasks. This helps measure brain activity while you are awake.

During study visits, researchers may collect data such as brain activity recordings, scan images, and responses from memory tests. No video or audio recording is used unless you are told ahead of time.
