Remote GLP-1
& Kidney Stones
Research Study
People taking GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, Mounjaro) who also have a history of kidney stones may not drink enough fluids, which can increase their risk of developing stones again. While staying well hydrated is known to help prevent kidney stones, it is not clear how to best support people on these medications in building better hydration habits.
This study will test whether a virtual program using a smart water bottle, app tracking, and reminders can help increase fluid intake and determine if this approach is practical for a larger study.

Additional Information
This study is being conducted to better understand how fluid intake habits affect kidney stone risk in people taking GLP-1 medications and living with obesity, and to explore ways to improve hydration and prevent future kidney stones.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Have a prior diagnosis of kidney stone
- Be currently taking a GLP-1 medication (e.g., Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, Mounjaro)
- Have obesity (BMI ≥ 30)
- Be age 18 or older
- Live in the continental U.S.
- Report difficulty meeting the recommended 2.5 L (84.5 fl oz) urine output daily
- Own a smartphone
- Be willing to participate in a 6-month study with up to 4 Zoom meetings and virtual urine collections
Exclusion Criteria:
- Have a prior diagnosis of a cystine kidney stone
- Have a medical or psychiatric condition or receive treatments that restrict their ability to drink fluids safely or make it difficult to complete the study program
- Have severe obesity BMI > 40
Study Activities and Timeline
The study lasts about 6 months and is completed entirely from home using Zoom, email, phone, text messages, and mailed study materials.
Enrollment and Study Setup
Before enrollment, all participants will complete a baseline 24-hour urine collection.
Participants will then complete one Zoom enrollment session to:
- Learn about hydration and kidney stone prevention
- Review study group assignment and, if assigned to the intervention group, set up the smart water bottle and mobile app
- Measure blood pressure during the session
Participants will also complete a weight measurement after the session.
Study Assessments
Assessments take place at three timepoints: baseline (start of study), month 3, and month 6. Activities include:
- Questionnaires
- Blood pressure and weight measurements
- A 24-hour urine collection using a kit mailed to the participant’s home
- Urine samples are mailed to a laboratory for testing and then destroyed after analysis
Some participants may also be invited to take part in audio-recorded interviews about their study experience at the end of the study.
Daily and Ongoing Activities
Participants will:
- Track thirst levels for 7 days at the beginning of the study through text messages
- Use a smart water bottle and mobile app to monitor daily fluid intake (timing depends on group assignment)
- Receive hourly text reminders to drink water if fluid intake is below goal (for one study group)
- Complete follow-up surveys and repeat measurements at months 3 and 6
All collected information, including fluid intake data, survey responses, and health measurements, will be kept private and used only for research purposes.
Participants may receive up to $150 for completing all study activities.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
