Remote Quit Smoking
Research Study

Researchers at Virginia Tech and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center are conducting a research study to evaluate a new approach to helping U.S. military veterans quit smoking cigarettes. The study is completely remote and combines nicotine replacement, financial incentives, and a mobile app designed to encourage positive future thinking to support smoking cessation.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether a combination of nicotine replacement therapy, financial incentives, and a mobile app can help military veterans successfully quit smoking. The findings may help improve future smoking cessation programs for veterans.

 

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Smoke cigarettes daily
  • Veteran of the US armed services
  • Willing to quit smoking in the next 30 days
  • Smoke 10 or more cigarettes per day
  • Has a smartphone with text messaging capabilities and a data plan
  • Ages 18 and older
  • Not regularly using other tobacco or nicotine products

If you are eligible and choose to participate, you will:

  1. Complete an online screening and informed consent process.
  2. Complete study surveys and download the study mobile app.
  3. Receive nicotine patches as part of the study.
  4. Use the app over approximately three months, including prompts to think about your health and positive future events.
  5. Submit breath samples during the study, which will be verified using facial recognition technology.
  6. Earn incentives for meeting smoking cessation goals, if applicable.
  7. Complete follow-up assessments during the final three months of the study.

All study activities are completed remotely, and participation lasts approximately six months.

Participants may receive up to $536 for completing study activities and may also earn incentives for quitting smoking. Participants will also receive nicotine patches at no cost as part of the study. Because the study is conducted entirely remotely, no transportation is required.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
