Home-Based Sleep
Research Study
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are conducting a study on how deep sleep patterns, specifically slow-wave activity, may be linked to chronic stress, aging, and risk for Alzheimer’s disease in older Black adults. This research aims to better understand whether improving sleep could help reduce long-term health risks and support healthier aging.
Fast Facts
Black or African American adults aged 55-80
No untreated sleep disorders
Compensation
up to $200
Conducted in
Philadelphia, PA
Additional Information
This home-based sleep study is being done to determine whether disruptions in deep sleep (slow-wave activity) may be a key factor connecting chronic stress to accelerated aging and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 55-80
- Identify as Black or African American
- No untreated sleep disorders

- One night using a home sleep apnea monitoring device
- One week wearing a wrist activity monitor and completing short daily sleep diaries
- If eligible, an overnight in-home sleep study where sensors are placed to measure sleep
- The next morning, staff will remove equipment, check vital signs, and complete a blood draw
- Some participants may be invited for an optional follow-up visit in about two years
Participants can receive up to $200 for completing the full study, with compensation provided for each step along the way. Those who are invited and complete the optional two-year follow-up may receive an additional $200, totaling up to $400.
