Researchers at Wayne State University are conducting the CALM Study to learn how an FDA-approved cannabidiol (CBD) medication and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) may affect brain activity in adults experiencing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This study is designed for adults ages 18 and older who are experiencing anxiety symptoms and are interested in participating in research focused on anxiety treatment and brain health.

Researchers hope to better understand how cannabidiol (CBD) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) work together to affect brain activity and anxiety symptoms in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Findings from this study may help improve future treatment approaches for anxiety.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18+
  • Experiencing anxiety symptoms
  • Right-handed
  • Can undergo an MRI (i.e., no braces, medical/dental implants, face tattoos/permanent makeup)

Participation includes:

  • A screening process to determine eligibility, including possible evaluation for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Two in-person brain imaging (MRI) visits — one before treatment and one after treatment
  • A five-week treatment phase that includes:
    • Taking EPIDIOLEX®, an FDA-approved CBD medication, twice daily at home
    • Participating in five complimentary one-hour CBT sessions, either online or in person
  • Completing questionnaires, interviews, and behavioral tasks throughout the study
  • A brief (~30-minute) debriefing visit after the second brain scan

Participants may receive up to $845 for completing study activities. The study also includes five free one-hour psychotherapy sessions. Uber transportation may be provided if needed for study visits.
