Remote Smoking Cessation
Research Study

Researchers at the University of Colorado Denver are conducting a research study about how couples support each other during a quit smoking attempt. This study is for couples where both partners smoke cigarettes and at least one partner wants to try quitting. The goal is to learn how couples can work together to make quitting easier.

Additional Information

This study is being done to better understand how couples help each other during a quit smoking attempt. Researchers hope the results will help improve future smoking cessation programs for couples.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18+ years old
  • Both partners must smoke at least 5 cigarettes per day on average
  • Couples must have been in a relationship for at least 6 months
  • At least one partner must be willing to try quitting smoking during the study
  • Overall Duration

    This study lasts about 2 to 3 weeks.

    Virtual Study Visit

    Participants will complete one virtual Zoom visit that takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

    During this visit, study staff will:

    • Confirm your identity
    • Ask questions to make sure you are eligible
    • Review the study information with you
    • Complete the consent process

    The study team may contact participants by phone, email, or text message during the study.

    At-Home Activities

    After the Zoom visit, participants will receive a study package in the mail. The package will include:

    • A reloadable gift card
    • Instructions for the study
    • A carbon monoxide breath monitor

     

  • Participants will complete:

    • One baseline survey before the quit attempt
    • 14 short daily surveys, completed once each evening
    • One follow-up survey about 2 weeks later

     

  • Each day, participants will also blow into the carbon monoxide breath monitor as instructed by the study team.

    The daily surveys will ask about:

    • Smoking behavior
    • Quit attempts
    • Stress and emotions
    • How partners supported or communicated with each other

     

  • All surveys are completed remotely. No in-person visits are required.

    Researchers will collect survey answers and breath monitor results for research purposes only. Personal information will be kept private as required by law.

Yes. Participants may receive up to $99 each for completing study activities. Participants will receive a reloadable gift card during the study.
