Remote Smoking Cessation
Research Study
Researchers at the University of Utah are conducting a remote research study called Project LIFT-UP to help inform the development of a chatbot designed to support people who want to quit smoking cigarettes. The study aims to better understand people’s tobacco use experiences, motivations for quitting, and experiences using technology like chatbots and text messaging.

This study is being done to help researchers create a chatbot that provides personalized support for people trying to quit smoking cigarettes. Researchers hope to learn more about participants’ tobacco use, quitting goals, and experiences with digital technology to improve future tobacco cessation support tools.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 18+
- Smoke cigarettes daily
- Motivated to quit smoking cigarettes
- Have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet to participate in one-on-one interviews with our team.
If you are eligible and choose to participate, you will complete a remote study visit over Zoom. Participation includes:
- Completing a short questionnaire about topics such as demographics, tobacco use history, and use of digital technology.
- Taking part in a one-on-one interview with a member of the research team to discuss:
- Your tobacco use history
- Reasons for wanting to quit smoking
- Challenges or barriers to quitting
- Your experiences using technology such as chatbots or text messaging
- Completing the study visit remotely using a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access.
A member of the study team may also contact you by phone to complete additional screening questions before scheduling your study visit.
Participants who complete the study visit will receive a $50 gift card for their time.
Because participation is fully remote, no transportation is required.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
