Research Study

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital are conducting a research study for adolescents and young adults ages 14–21 who are experiencing challenges related to alcohol or drug use. This fully online study is evaluating whether a combination of group sessions and one-on-one therapy may support recovery, wellbeing, and social connection over time.

This study is being conducted to evaluate new approaches to treating substance use among adolescents and young adults. Researchers hope to learn whether online therapy and support sessions may help reduce substance use and improve overall wellbeing and social support.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 14-21
  • Diagnosed with substance use disorder
  • Have used substances in the past 90 days (or 90 days prior to being in a treatment program/counseling)
  • Live in an Eastern time zone state
  • Not currently receiving treatment for substance use concerns
  • Able to participate in online assessments over approximately 12 months
  • Comfortable with ID verification and a camera-on interview
  • If under 18, able to obtain parental consent to participate

If you choose to participate, you will first complete a confidential online assessment and a phone screening with study staff to determine eligibility.

If eligible and enrolled, you will:

  • Be randomly assigned to one of two online treatment groups
  • Attend 10 weekly online therapy sessions lasting approximately 60–90 minutes each
  • Complete 5 confidential online study assessments over 12 months:
    • Initial baseline assessment (approximately 2–3 hours)
    • Follow-up assessments at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months (approximately 60–90 minutes each)

Participants under age 18 will need parental or guardian consent to participate.

Participants may receive up to $250 for completing study-related assessments over the course of the study.

All study activities are conducted online, so no transportation is required.
