Remote Vaping & Smoking
Research Study

Nicotine vaping is common among young adults, and many people who vape want to reduce or quit their nicotine use. While nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is often used to help people quit tobacco products, less is known about how well digital programs combined with NRT work for helping young adults reduce or quit vaping. This study will examine whether a digital intervention and NRT can help young adults reduce their nicotine vaping and will compare outcomes between different types of participants who use nicotine products.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to better understand nicotine vaping among young adults and to explore ways to help individuals reduce or quit vaping. Researchers are examining whether a digital support program combined with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can improve vaping reduction and cessation outcomes.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18–26 years old
  • Vape nicotine at least 5 days per week and have done so for the past 6 months
  • Interested in reducing or quitting nicotine vaping
  • Able to receive text messages/notifications and download a study app on a smartphone (Android or iPhone)
  • Able to speak, read, and understand English
  • Willing and able to provide informed consent and participate in study procedures

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of adverse reactions to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)
  • Currently have, or have had within the past year, a major psychiatric disorder, including severe alcohol or substance use disorder (excluding tobacco use disorder)
  • Lifetime history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Have a major medical condition that may interfere with study participation or assessments

Overall Duration
This is a fully remote study that lasts about 6 weeks, with a 3-month follow-up after the main study period.

Study Activities
Participants will complete all study activities remotely using a smartphone app and Zoom.

To begin, participants will complete:

  • A screening visit over Zoom (about 1 hour and 15 minutes) to determine eligibility ($10 compensation)
  • A brief orientation visit over Zoom (about 20–30 minutes) to learn how to use the study app and complete study procedures

Participants will also provide saliva samples using mail-in kits to confirm eligibility.

At-Home Activities
For 6 weeks, participants will use a smartphone app to take part in the study. They will:

  • Complete short daily surveys about vaping, smoking, and cravings (a few minutes per day)
  • Receive either informational support or daily intervention messages, depending on group assignment
  • Use the app to set a quit date, report nicotine use, and request nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)
  • Receive free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to help with cravings and withdrawal

Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups:

  1. Daily surveys + NRT + access to an informational website
  2. Daily surveys + NRT + daily supportive intervention messages

After the 6-week period, participants will complete a follow-up assessment at 3 months.

Participants may receive up to $300 for completing study activities, including completing at least 75% of daily surveys.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
