Researchers at University at Buffalo are conducting a research study about smoking and vaping. This study looks at how people feel, think, and behave when they go without smoking or vaping for one day. Researchers hope this study will help improve understanding of nicotine use and withdrawal.

Researchers already know a lot about what happens when people stop smoking cigarettes. However, less is known about what happens when people stop vaping nicotine. This study compares smoking and vaping to better understand how going without nicotine affects daily feelings, thinking, and behavior.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Are 21 to 50 years old
  • Regularly smoke cigarettes
  • Live within 50 miles of the University at Buffalo South Campus

Overall Duration

The study lasts about 3 weeks and includes 3 in-person visits at the University at Buffalo South Campus.

In-Lab Activities

Visit 1: Orientation Visit

  • About 1.5 hours long
  • Participants will:
    • Complete questionnaires about smoking, vaping, and daily habits
    • Provide urine and breath samples
    • Complete short computer activities
    • Learn about the study procedures

Visits 2 and 3: Lab Visits

  • Each visit lasts about 4 hours
  • Visits take place about one week apart
  • Participants will:
    • Complete questionnaires and computer tasks
    • Provide urine and breath samples
    • Spend time relaxing with entertainment options such as:
      • Xbox with Game Pass
      • Netflix
      • WiFi access
      • Snacks

Before one of the lab visits, participants will be asked to try not to smoke, vape, or use nicotine products for 24 hours before coming to the lab.

Researchers will collect survey answers, breath samples, urine samples, and computer task results during the study.

Yes. Participants can earn up to $385 for completing all study visits and activities.
