Alcohol Use Disorder
Research Study

There are several medication-based treatments for alcohol use disorder, but 60% of people who use these treatments relapse within 6 months. This research study is focused on treatment with a form of non-invasive brain stimulation called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Our team seeks to improve this treatment strategy by developing personalized TMS, guided by fMRI brain scans, as a way to reduce the brain’s reaction to alcohol cues.

Additional Information

This study is being done to evaluate a new strategy to treat alcohol use disorder. For many people, relapse is a problem with pharmacological (medication-based) treatments. This research study will explore the effectiveness of first taking an fMRI scan of your brain, and then using that information to guide the use of TMS (non-invasive brain stimulation) to reduce your brain’s reactiveness to alcohol. We hope that this strategy will reduce relapse rates and alcohol cravings for individuals with alcohol use disorder.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Living with alcohol use disorder
  • Able to undergo an MRI (no non-removable metal in the body)
  • Ages 25-75

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of bipolar disorder or psychosis
  • History of seizures
  • Any substance use disorders other than alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco use disorder

Your total participation time will be approximately 10 hours over 3 months. Study activities will include:

  • Screening: 15 minutes
  • Timepoint 1: Consent/HIPAA (1h), pre-TMS scan (1h), questionnaires (3h). Total 5 hours on 1 day.
  • Treatment session 1: 1 hour
  • Post-session 1 scan and questionnaires: 1 hour
  • Treatment session 2: 1 hour
  • Post-session 2 scan and questionnaires: 1 hour
  • Follow-up assessments: 45 minutes (15 minutes each, at 1-, 2-, and 3-months after the study)

All procedures will be conducted in-person. Lyft rides can be offered to and from study visits if needed.

Participants may receive up to $250 for completing the entire study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
