Menthol and WS-3 are ingredients in cigarettes that can create a cooling feeling. This research study looks at how smoking feels when using cigarettes with different amounts of menthol or WS-3. If you are an adult who currently smokes, join now to help public health researchers and the FDA learn more about tobacco use.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to better understand how people who smoke menthol or non-menthol cigarettes respond to the cooling sensations from cigarettes with different levels of cooling ingredients. This information may help public health researchers and the FDA better understand how menthol and other cooling agents affect tobacco use.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Smoke cigarettes daily (menthol or non-menthol)
  • Not trying to quit smoking
  • Ages 21-65
  • Live in New Mexico
  • Willing to attend 3 visits at the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque
  • Willing to smoke research cigarettes with menthol or WS-3 during testing visits

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Current pregnancy
  • Current breathing problems
  • Major or unstable medical conditions (e.g., cancer, COPD, chronic lung or liver disease)

If you join and qualify, you would come to The Mind Research Network in Albuquerque, NM for three visits over about 1 to 3 weeks, for about 4 hours total.

First Visit:

  • Answer questions from the study staff about your health and tobacco use
  • Undergo a brief health exam
  • Provide breath and urine samples to see whether the study is safe and appropriate for you


2 Testing Visits:

  • Take 4 puffs from each of 3 study cigarettes
  • Answer questions about how each cigarette felt, including cooling, harshness, liking, satisfaction, craving, and mood
  • Have your heart rate and blood pressure checked

Participants may receive up to $180 in compensation for their time.
