Research Study

Researchers at McLean Hospital are conducting a research study for adults with schizophrenia who are currently taking medication to manage their symptoms. This study is evaluating an investigational medication that may help address weight gain, thinking and memory challenges, and long-term symptom stability when used alongside standard schizophrenia treatment.

Additional Information

Researchers are studying whether an investigational medication can safely improve weight management, cognitive functioning (such as thinking and memory), and overall stability in adults with schizophrenia who are already receiving standard treatment. There are currently no approved medications specifically designed to address many of these challenges associated with schizophrenia and antipsychotic treatment.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Diagnosed with schizophrenia
  • Have a study partner who is willing to participate
  • On a stable dose of antipsychotic medication for at least 2 months
  • Live in Massachusetts
  • Ages 18-55
  • Taking no more than 2 antipsychotic medications
  • If diagnosed 6 or more years ago, have experienced at least 1 relapse in the last 3 years
  • Willing and able to complete 25 study visits — some in-person and some virtual


Exclusion Criteria:

  • Bipolar disorder diagnosis
  • Borderline personality disorder diagnosis
  • Eating disorder diagnosis
  • Schizoaffective disorder or other related conditions
  • Live in a hospital, prison, or crisis center
  • Currently taking clozapine
  • Currently taking a GLP-1 or other weight loss medication

If you are interested in participating, you will first complete a phone screening to determine whether you may qualify.

If eligible, you may:

  1. Attend a screening visit and complete study assessments.
  2. Continue taking your current schizophrenia medication throughout the study.
  3. Receive either the investigational medication or a placebo in addition to your current treatment.
  4. Participate in approximately 25 study visits, including a combination of in-person and virtual appointments.
  5. Complete assessments related to your health, symptoms, weight, thinking and memory, and overall well-being.
  6. Identify a reliable study partner who can participate in certain study activities.
  7. Complete a follow-up visit after finishing the study.

Participants may receive compensation of up to $4,182.50 for completing study-related activities. Additional study perks may include consultation with a dietitian, access to study-related medication, meal reimbursement, and travel support. Transportation assistance may also be available through Lyft rides arranged directly by the study team.
