Researchers want to better understand whether features of the home such as lighting, room layout, clutter, colors, or patterns may contribute to behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. The information collected may help researchers develop future tools and interventions that support caregivers and people living with dementia.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

• Ages 18+
• Caring for a loved one with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia
• Reliable access to the internet and a smartphone or tablet with camera capabilities
• Able to read and speak English
• Live with the individual you are caring for with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia
• On most days, the person with dementia exhibits at least one of the following symptoms of dementia: delusions, hallucinations, agitation/aggression/resistant behaviors, anxiety, depression/dysphoria, elation/euphoria, apathy/indifference, disinhibition, irritability/impatience, motor disturbances, sleep disturbances, appetite issues

Before joining the study, a member of the research team will complete a brief phone screening to confirm eligibility.

All study activities are completed remotely using the secure MyCap mobile app over approximately 18 days.

Step 1: Complete a Baseline Survey

You will complete a one-time survey that takes about 30 minutes. The survey asks about:

• • You and your caregiving experience
  • The person you care for
  • Your home environment
  • Dementia-related behaviors you have observed

Step 2: Complete Daily Surveys

For the next 14 days, you will complete 4 short surveys each day (about 15 minutes each).

During each survey, you will:

• Report whether the person you care for experienced behavioral symptoms
• Answer questions about those symptoms
• Upload up to 5 photos of the home environment where the person was during that time, whether or not symptoms occurred

You will receive survey reminders by email and/or text message.

Step 3: Exit Survey

At the end of the study, you will complete an exit survey that reassesses questions from the baseline survey and the home environment to individual dementia behavior survey validation protocol. This survey will take about 15 minutes to complete.

Yes. Participants may receive up to $484 in gift cards based on completed study activities.

Compensation includes:

• $20 for completing the baseline survey 

• Up to $32 per day for completed daily surveys, based on completion and photos uploaded

• $16 for completing the exit survey
