Remote Breast Cancer
Research Study

Breast cancer can affect more than physical health—it can also impact a person’s emotional well-being. While many breast cancer survivors experience symptoms of depression or anxiety, researchers still do not know enough about how to provide effective mental health support through smartphone technology. This study will examine how women with breast cancer use and respond to a supportive smartphone app and aims to determine whether mobile programs may be a useful and accessible way to support mental health among breast cancer survivors.

  • Women diagnosed with breast cancer in the past 5 years
  • Experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety
  • Women ages 18+
  • Own a smartphone
  • Diagnosed with Stage I, II, or III breast cancer
Overall Duration

This study lasts about 8 weeks and is completed remotely. Participants will use a smartphone app, complete online questionnaires, and take part in phone calls with study staff.

Remote Activities

Participants will first complete an online screening questionnaire. If they appear eligible, they will schedule a phone call with study staff to further determine eligibility. Participants who qualify and choose to join the study will complete an online consent form.

Before beginning the study app, participants will complete an online questionnaire that takes about 45 minutes. The questionnaire asks about mental health, emotions, and daily experiences.

Participants will then be assigned a supportive smartphone app to use for 8 weeks. The app includes activities designed to support mental health, such as reducing negative thinking patterns, learning about mental health, practicing gratitude, using relaxation breathing techniques, reflecting on positive memories, and mindfulness exercises.

At the end of the 8 weeks, participants will complete another online questionnaire that takes about 45 minutes. They will also participate in a phone interview lasting approximately 30 minutes to discuss their experience using the app and provide feedback about the program.

Data Collection

Researchers will collect information from the online questionnaires, app activities, and phone interview. The phone interview may be audio recorded for research purposes. No medical procedures, blood draws, or physical examinations are required.

Participants may receive up to $100 in compensation for their time and participation in the study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
