Remote Emotion Regulation
Research Study

Researchers know that some people experience intense emotions and related behavioral and interpersonal difficulties. It is still not fully understood how environmental factors in daily life contribute to these emotional experiences. This is important because a better understanding of these patterns could help identify early warning signs of emotional distress and improve treatment. This study will examine how emotions and behaviors change in real time in adults who struggle with intense emotions to better understand what leads to distress and what helps support emotional stability.

Overall Duration

This study lasts about 6 to 7 months in total. The main active part of the study lasts 60 days, followed by follow-up surveys at 3 months and 6 months after the main study period.

At-Home Activities
Participants will complete an online intake interview that takes about 45–60 minutes, followed by a 1-hour online assessment. After that, participants will take part in a 60-day study period where they complete short surveys on their smartphone about 4 times per day, each taking about 4 minutes. Every 14 days during this period, participants will also complete a longer survey that takes about 15 minutes. Participants will also wear a Fitbit for the 60 days to track sleep and activity. After the 60-day period, participants will complete follow-up surveys at 3 months and 6 months. All responses are collected through secure online systems, and Fitbit data is used only for research on sleep and activity patterns. No video or audio is recorded during the study.

Participants may receive up to $490 for their time.
