Nicotine & Cannabis
Research Study
Nicotine and cannabis are often used together, but researchers still do not fully understand how using both affects the body and brain. Learning more about how these substances interact may help improve future treatments and support for people who use nicotine and cannabis. This study will examine how daily nicotine use and regular cannabis use affect health and behavior to better understand their combined effects.

Overall Duration
This study includes a 30-minute screening visit, a 30-minute orientation visit, and eight 9-hour in-person study visits at UCSF in San Francisco.
In-Person Study Visits
During the screening and orientation visits, the research team will review the study, answer your questions, and determine if you are eligible to participate. During each of the eight study visits, you will use a study vaporizer to take a set number of puffs from the assigned study product. Throughout the day, researchers will collect blood samples, ask you to complete questionnaires about how you feel, and measure your heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and skin blood flow. After abstaining from nicotine and cannabis for 12 hours before each full study visit, you will also have a period where you can use the assigned study product while researchers continue to monitor your body’s responses.
Participants may receive up to $3,530 for completing the study, including bonus compensation for abstaining from nicotine and cannabis for the required 12 hours before each full study visit. Transportation reimbursement for Lyft or Uber rides to and from the study site may also be available with a valid receipt. During the full study visits, participants will have access to free Wi-Fi, snacks, a private room, and optional breakfast and lunch.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
