Additional Information

Living with HIV while also dealing with substance use can make it harder to stay healthy and keep up with medical care. Researchers are studying whether additional support, education, and therapy can help participants improve their overall health and stay engaged in HIV treatment.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Living with HIV
  • Have used substances in the past 12 months
  • Live in Florida
  • Ages 18+

If you qualify after a phone screening, you will complete several research visits over approximately 48 to 52 weeks.

Research Visits

Phone Screening

  • A member of the research team will call to ask screening questions and determine whether you are eligible.

 

Baseline Visit (Up to 3 hours)

During your first visit, you will:

  • Complete a clinical interview.
  • Answer questions about yourself, your health, and your experiences.
  • Provide a blood sample.
  • Provide a urine sample.

 

Resource Visit (About 1 hour)

  • Learn about local services and resources available for people living with HIV who use substances.

 

Follow-Up Research Visits (4 visits over 12 months)

Each visit lasts about 1–2 hours and includes:

  • Questions about your emotions and well-being.
  • Questions about taking your HIV medications.
  • Questions about your healthcare visits and overall health.

 

If You Are Selected for the Intervention Group

Some participants will also complete additional study activities:

Five Individual Therapy Sessions

  • Meet one-on-one with a study therapist.
  • One session each week for 5 weeks.
  • Each session lasts about 1 hour.

 

Daily Text Messages

  • Respond to brief daily text messages about your emotions.
  • Continue for approximately 12 weeks.

Yes. Eligible participants may receive up to $365.50 for completing study visits.
