Researchers at NYU Langone Health are conducting a research study to help develop a smartphone app for adults who smoke and are experiencing financial hardship. The app is designed to support people in quitting smoking while also improving their financial well-being.

Smoking rates remain higher among people experiencing financial hardship, and financial stress can make it more difficult to quit. Researchers want to hear directly from people who smoke to better understand what features would be most helpful in a smartphone app that supports both quitting smoking and improving financial well-being.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Smoke at least 5 cigarettes a day
- Struggle to pay for basics like food, housing, medical care, and heating
- Own an Android
- New York residents
- Ages 18+
If you qualify, you’ll:
- Join one 90-minute virtual focus group using your Android smartphone or another device with internet access.
- Share your thoughts and opinions about the design and features of a new smartphone app.
- Discuss what would help people quit smoking while managing financial challenges.
- Provide feedback that will help researchers improve the app before it is tested in a larger study.
Researchers may take notes or record the focus group for research purposes. Your information will be kept confidential as allowed by law.
Participants who complete the virtual focus group will receive a $100 e-gift card.
