Additional Information

This study aims to understand how Haskap berry juice affects gut bacteria, inflammation, and markers of metabolic health. Researchers hope to learn how differences in gut bacteria may influence the body’s response to the antioxidants found in Haskap berries.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 35-65
  • Living with overweight or obesity
  • Do not have a diagnosis of Type 1 or 2 diabetes
  • Are not taking cholesterol-lowering, anti-inflammatory, blood pressure, or weight-loss drugs
  • Do not smoke cigarettes or have a history of smoking
  • Do not have a food allergy that may include Haskap berries, lemon juice, or food colorings
  • Have not taken antibiotics within 90 days or supplements including probiotics/prebiotics or “superfood” supplements within 30 days of starting the study

If you qualify and choose to participate, you will complete the following activities:

  1. Attend a screening visit: Visit the Nutrition Research Laboratory for 45–60 minutes for health screening, body measurements, and a blood draw to determine eligibility.

  2. Complete your first study visit: If eligible, return to the lab for about 60 minutes to complete questionnaires, body measurements, and a treadmill exercise test. You will also provide a stool sample.

  3. Drink Haskap berry juice for 8 weeks: Drink the study-provided juice twice daily, about 12 hours apart. You will keep daily logs, follow dietary guidelines, and pick up additional juice from the lab every two weeks.

  4. Attend two more study visits: Visit the lab before and after the 8-week period for approximately 1.5–2 hours each. These visits include blood draws, treadmill exercise tests, blood pressure measurements, dietary questionnaires, and stool sample collection.

The study takes about 10 weeks to complete, with approximately 5 hours spent at the laboratory. Participants will also receive results from their dietary analysis, exercise testing, and blood work.

Participants who complete the study may receive up to $200 for their time and participation. Those who complete the screening visit but do not qualify may receive a $10 Amazon gift card. The study covers parking fees, but participants must provide their own transportation to the laboratory.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
