BreatheWell
for Sleep Apnea

Researchers at UCLA are conducting a study to learn whether a 12-week breathing training program can improve health in adults who may have sleep apnea and high blood pressure. The program uses a handheld device to strengthen the muscles used for breathing. You do not need to have a previous diagnosis of sleep apnea or high blood pressure to be considered for the study.

Additional Information

Sleep apnea and high blood pressure can affect cardiovascular health and brain function. Researchers at UCLA are studying whether a 12-week breathing training program may help improve blood pressure, brain activity, cardiovascular function, and overall well-being in adults who may have sleep apnea.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Suspected moderate-to-severe sleep apnea (e.g., snoring, daytime fatigue, higher body weight)
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Are able to complete 2 in-person assessments at UCLA
  • Have no major or unstable medical conditions
  • Ages 18+

Screening

  • Complete screening questionnaires.

  • Complete an at-home sleep study to help determine whether you qualify.

First in-person visit

  • Visit UCLA for an MRI scan of your brain and non-invasive health assessments, including blood pressure and heart activity measurements.

At-home breathing training

  • Complete a breathing training program using a handheld device every day for 12 weeks.

  • Complete questionnaires during the study.

  • The daily breathing training and questionnaires should take approximately 5–10 minutes total.

Follow-up assessments

  • Return to UCLA for a second in-person visit with assessments similar to those completed at your first visit.

  • Complete a second at-home sleep study.

As a participant, you may receive up to $720 for completing all study-related activities. A complimentary Lyft or parking voucher can be provided to help with transportation to UCLA.
