Additional Information

This study aims to learn more about how people respond to sleep loss. In particular, we want to see how individuals feel and perform on tests where sleep and wake timing are controlled in a laboratory under specific lighting conditions.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Generally healthy adults ages 18-40
  • Not currently taking any medications
  • Do not currently smoke cigarettes
  • Not currently employed as a shift worker
  • Able to keep a regular sleep schedule
  • Able to undergo an MRI (no non-removable objects in the body or claustrophobia)
  • Able and willing to travel to Boston for at least 1 in-person screening visit and a 7-night, 8-day inpatient stay

The main part of the study is a weeklong inpatient stay at BIDMC, where you will live in the hospital for the entire time.

Before the inpatient stay:

  • Complete 1-2 remote screening visits and 1 in-person screening visit
  • At least a week of sleep and activity tracking
  • One MRI scan right before your stay

Inpatient stay:

  • Stay 7 nights and 8 days in a private room at BIDMC, screen-free (no cell phone, internet access or live television)
  • Have your sleep schedule, activity, light levels, and diet monitored
  • We may change your sleep schedule so that it is different than usual during the study

After the inpatient stay:

  • Another MRI scan right after your stay

Please note that participants are allowed to drive themselves to screening visits, but are NOT allowed to drive themselves to the inpatient stay.

As a participant, you may receive up to $2420. We can also offer pre-scheduled Lyft rides to and from study visits, or reimburse up to $100 for travel and parking ($500 if traveling from out of state, with receipts).

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
