Additional Information

This study is being done to learn how well different treatments work for adolescents with binge eating. Researchers will compare two treatments with an app for tracking eating and mood to see how they affect binge eating, weight, and quality of life.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria for Adolescents:

  • Aged 12-17
  • Has elevated weight
  • Experiences binge eating 4+ times per month (e.g., loss of control over eating, consuming large amounts of food at one time)
  • Does not experience purging (e.g., preventing weight gain by self-induced vomiting, misuse of medications, fasting, excessive exercise)
  • Is not currently taking stimulant medications (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin) for ADHD
  • Has a parent who is willing to participate
  • You will complete a phone screening and an interview and surveys with a clinician to see if the study is a good fit.
  • You will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: cognitive behavioral therapy, lifestyle behavioral obesity intervention, or an app that tracks eating and mood.
  • Treatment or app use will last about 6 months, with sessions or check-ins every 1–2 weeks.
  • A parent or caregiver will complete surveys throughout the study and attend a family session every 1–2 months.
  • After treatment, you will complete an interview about your experience and how well the treatment worked.
  • You will have follow-up visits 6 and 12 months after treatment to see how the effects last.
  • The study is conducted online through telehealth, so no travel is required.
  • Participants assigned to the app group will have the opportunity to choose one of the treatments after completing the app stage.

Families can receive up to $950 for participating. Participants can also receive free treatment, prizes for staying in the study during the follow-up period, and a free consultation with a psychologist who specializes in eating disorders and weight in adolescents.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
