Down Syndrome
Research Study
Researchers at Boys Town Institute for Human Neuroscience are conducting a study on brain activity and development in youth ages 12–19 with Down syndrome. The study uses brain imaging and cognitive and motor tests to better understand how the brain develops in youth with Down syndrome.

Additional Information
Researchers want to better understand how brain activity relates to cognitive and motor development in youth with Down syndrome. This research may help identify brain changes associated with development and improve understanding of brain health in people with Down syndrome.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 12-19
- Have a diagnosis of Down syndrome
- Have no other neurological or psychiatric disorders
- Have no metal in the head or mouth, including braces or permanent retainers
- Do not have an autism diagnosis
The study involves two in-person visits at Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
Visit 1: Brain Imaging (about 1.5 hours)
Complete a magnetoencephalography (MEG) scan while performing simple motor and visual tasks.
Complete an MRI scan to take pictures of the brain. Participants will need to lie still but can watch a movie or show during the scan.
Visit 2: Cognitive and Motor Testing (about 1.5 hours)
Complete tests that measure memory, attention, reaction time, and other thinking skills.
Perform reaching and coordination tasks using a robotic arm device and a pegboard.
Provide a small blood sample (about three teaspoons). A trained professional will collect the sample, and numbing cream will be used to help reduce discomfort.
A parent or guardian must be present to provide consent but does not need to participate in the study activities. Youth must have a diagnosis of Down syndrome before screening.
Participants will receive $150 for taking part in the study. Transportation assistance may be available for eligible participants traveling from more than 50 miles away, including Uber, flights, mileage reimbursement, and meal reimbursement.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
