Additional Information

This study aims to better understand whether online mental health videos and virtual mentoring with Appa Health can help teens manage difficult thoughts and feelings and support their emotional well-being. Researchers will compare different approaches to learn how teens engage with these resources over time.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

  • Ages 13-18
  • Experience feelings of loneliness, stress or low motivation
  • Have not been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder or substance use disorder
  • Live in the United States

This study takes place entirely online, so no in-person visits are required. Participation includes the following steps:

Join the study:
Teens will complete a screening to see if they’re eligible to participate.

Be assigned to a group:
Teens will be randomly assigned to one of three groups:

  • Appa content + mentoring: Access to Appa’s mental health content, paired with weekly one-on-one virtual sessions with a relatable, college-graduate mentor who provides personalized guidance and support.

  • Access to Appa’s mental health content only.

  • A waitlist group that receives educational resources about mental health and well-being.

Complete online surveys:

All teen participants will complete three online surveys about their mental health, well-being, and experiences at the beginning of the study, week 6, and week 12. Caregiver participation is optional. Caregivers who choose to participate will complete their own separate set of surveys at the same three time points.

Access additional resources:
After the 12-week study, all teens will be offered access to Appa’s services.

Teen participants can receive a $25 gift card for each completed survey, up to $75 total for completing all three surveys.

Caregivers who choose to participate can receive a $5 gift card for each completed survey, up to $15 total.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
