Study Background

Having a family history of bipolar disorder is one of the strongest risk factors for developing bipolar disorder.

Identifying and treating the children of parents with bipolar disorder may help to prevent or slow the progression of bipolar disorder. 

In addition to providing treatment for the child, we will also learn more about how we may best help others in the future.

Additional Information

The purpose of this study is to understand the effectiveness of two psychotherapy approaches in preventing or decreasing symptoms in adolescents with a family history of bipolar disorder.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Parent with a child ages 12-18
  • Parent diagnosed with bipolar disorder
  • Child has not been diagnosed with bipolar disorder
  • Live in the United States

Involvement includes the child participating in an initial interview about mood, sleep, and emotions. After this assessment, both you and your child will have one hour follow-up session with a study therapist. All children will receive referral resources and be placed into one of two talk therapy interventions with a research therapist. Parents will also be asked to complete a diagnostic screening interview and study assessments.

Families will be compensated for their participation in our study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.

Visits can be conducted via videoconference for any participant residing in the United States or if preferred, in-person at Western Psychiatric Hospital’s (WPH) outpatient Bellefield Towers offices located on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA.
