Looking for help to better manage you and your child’s weight? Researchers at Seattle Children’s want to find ways to help high weight status kids, 10-12, and their parents reach and maintain a healthy weight.
During this 24-week treatment program, you and your child will attend free family-based weight management classes, and your child will be randomized to receive either a study medicine that would help them with weight control OR a placebo medicine.

Additional Information
Researchers at Seattle Children’s want to find ways to help high weight status kids and their parents reach and maintain a healthy weight.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Are the parent or guardian of a child 10-12 years old
- Can attend weekly treatment sessions with your child, online and/or in-person
- BMI of 27 or greater
Your child may qualify for this study if they meet the following criteria:
- Heavy for their age and gender
- Between the ages of 10-12 (or in this age group within the next 6 months)
- Have at least one parent with BMI of 27 or greater
Please note this is an English language only study.
If you are eligible and decide to take part in this study, you and your child would:
- Attend free family-based weight management classes, which total about 90 minutes long and meet once a week in the evening for 6 months at one of our clinic sites OR remotely (we could help with travel costs and remote connection equipment)
- Get measurements of your weight & height, diet, and activity before, during, and after treatment
Your child would:
- Be randomized to receive either a study medicine that would help them with weight control OR a placebo medicine
Your child would have 6 additional visits:
- Three 6-hour visits at the University of Washington, where your child will have two MRI scans, blood testing, body measurements, and surveys to complete
- Three 60-minute visits for body measurements at 2, 6, and 12 months after treatment ends
You will be compensated up to $570 in gift cards and checks for your participation.
