Study Background

SHUTi MIND is a study for adults ages 65 and over who suffer from insomnia or sleeplessness and have cognitive concerns.

Participants will use the program SHUTi OASIS, which is an interactive, web-based training program designed to improve the sleep of adults with insomnia. It was developed at the University of Virginia with funding from the National Institute on Aging. SHUTi OASIS provides a tailored educational program for individuals who are experiencing sleep difficulties, including those having difficulty falling asleep, waking in the middle of the night, or waking too early in the morning.

The purpose of this study is to find out if an Internet intervention is an effective way to treat insomnia for this population.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the Sleep Healthy Using the Internet for Older Adult Sufferers of Insomnia and Sleeplessness (SHUTi OASIS) program, an interactive program delivered over the Internet, for people 65+ living with insomnia and who have cognitive concerns to improve sleep and maintain brain health.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Key Criteria:

  • Aged 65 years or older
  • Experiencing insomnia or sleeplessness
  • Have memory concerns (consider your memory worse than someone of the same age)
  • No unmanaged, obstructive sleep apnea

Participants in the website group will use a website with information about insomnia and treatment strategies with no set time requirements. Participants in the SHUTi OASIS group will begin with an Overview, which reviews educational information on sleep problems, and helps study volunteers evaluate their own problems and treatment goals. There are five additional units, or Cores, focused on specific methods for improving sleep.

Each Core takes about 45-60 minutes to complete. After completing a Core, you will spend a week incorporating what you learned into your daily routine. The next week, a new Core will be reviewed. During the program, you will complete different exercises designed to help develop new sleep habits and skills. Participants will also complete daily Sleep Diaries while using the program to allow SHUTi OASIS to make personalized recommendations.

All participants will complete an online cognitive test, online questionnaire, and 10 sleep diaries at each assessment time point over a 2 year period.

Up to $300 in gift cards is provided as compensation for completing this research program.

There is no cost to participate in this study.
