Study Background

The Exercise & Healthy Aging research team at Oregon Research Institute is conducting a research study aimed at understanding how exercise improves balance, mobility, and general health.

In this study, we are specifically examining the effectiveness of different tai ji quan interventions at reducing falls, as compared to other exercise programs. If you are older than 65 and are having issues with balance or have fallen in the last 12 months, you may be a good fit for our research program.

Participants will receive FREE online exercise classes twice weekly for 24 weeks. Check your eligibility today and join from anywhere in the U.S.!

Additional Information

Our researchers want to learn more about exercise related to balance, mobility, and falls. The study is being done to determine the potential physical, cognitive and mental health benefits that result from participating in an online exercise program.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 65+ years old
  • Experience issues with balance and/or have had a fall in the past 12 months
  • Not currently participating in vigorous activity or tai chi exercise classes
  • Able to walk 1-2 blocks without assistance

Participation lasts a total of approximately 6 months. Participants will be enrolled in a 1-hour exercise class twice weekly for a total of 24 weeks (2 hours per week for 48 class sessions).

During the study:

  • Once a month, a member of our team will contact you to find out if you have fallen at home or outside the home since you last spoke with a team member.
  • Four times (at baseline, four months, six months, and 12 months) you will have an hour-long Zoom meeting to complete some tasks.
    • physical tasks (e.g., walking and balancing activities)
    • cognitive tasks (e.g., remembering things and paying attention to stimuli)

Eligible participants will receive 24 weeks of fully remote and FREE online exercise classes. Participation may also help improve your balance, strength, and physical mobility, as well as prevent falls.

Participants will be compensated up to $120 based on their participation in this research study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
