Assessment of Life events and Momentary Alcohol use (ALMA) Research Study

This research study examines the influence of people’s backgrounds on their daily lives. If eligible, participants will complete five semi-annual assessment periods (i.e., at 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months). For each assessment period, participants will complete an orientation session and an experience monitoring phase. During the experience monitoring phase, they will complete three brief surveys per day, every day, for 28 days.

Study Background

Researchers at the University of Houston are studying how Hispanic and Latino/a backgrounds and cultural identities impact their self-perceptions, daily activities, and alcohol use.

This research project examines how the backgrounds, cultural identity, beliefs, and social environments of Hispanic and Latino/a individuals together shape their self-perceptions, daily activities, and alcohol use.

While there have been surveys meant to look into these questions, surveys alone may not allow us to get the full picture. To gain a deeper understanding of these influences in real-world contexts, we are employing experience monitoring research, which allows us to observe behaviors and feelings in real-time through smart devices.

Our study utilizes five phases of experience monitoring to track how these relationships evolve over time. In looking at daily experiences, we hope to determine which factors contribute to different outcomes in the Hispanic and Latino/a communities.

The results may provide valuable insights into why some individuals succeed more easily while others face challenges, ultimately informing strategies for better support and intervention.
