Study Background
Have you or someone you know used opioids, like heroin, oxycodone, or Vicodin in the past month? If so, you may be eligible to participate in our research study!
The MiBEST study explores topics such as substance use, barriers to treatment, and healthcare utilization. Participants who report past month use of opioids and another substance (such as stimulants or alcohol) will be invited to complete a series of interviews and surveys over the course of a year.
With this data, we expect to learn more about how and why people use multiple substances, which in turn will help inform future efforts to improve care and decrease barriers to accessing treatment. Advance research today and join our compensated study from wherever you are!

Additional Information
The purpose of this research study is to learn more about motives and other factors associated with use of multiple substances, as well as identifying how those factors are associated with use of healthcare services and barriers that people experience in accessing care.
You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 18-75
- Identify as African American/Black
- Misuse opioids. This includes using street opioids (such as heroin and fentanyl) OR using prescription opioids in ways other than prescribed (such as oxycodone, Vicodin, Percocet, or others).
- Misuse another substance (such as alcohol, cocaine, Adderall, Xanax, cannabis, or others)
- Fluent in English
- Reliable access to a phone for surveys and interviews
Once enrolled, this year-long study involves:
- Screening survey (phone or online)
- Baseline survey + interview (phone, online, or in-person)
- Weekly interviews (x4; phone or in-person)
- 4-, 8-, and 12-month follow-up interviews (phone or in-person) and surveys (phone, online, or in-person)
Compensation is provided up to $390 for completing the entire study.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
