Study Background

Researchers at Syracuse University are looking for individuals diagnosed with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) to participate in a study evaluating a potential treatment for alcohol use.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for people with HIV. Our researchers are interested in seeing if a brief mindfulness-based intervention can help people living with HIV who drink alcohol. If the intervention is successful, it may help people make changes in their alcohol use, cope with stress in healthy ways, and improve HIV treatment-related outcomes.

This study is conducted virtually. Participants must be able to complete 4-6 weekly intervention sessions, a post-treatment visit, and 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month follow-up visits.

Additional Information

The purpose of this study is to improve the health and wellness of individuals with HIV by evaluating if mindfulness can help reduce alcohol use.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18+
  • Diagnosed with HIV and on antiretroviral therapy (ART)
  • Drinker

This study is being conducted remotely, so it would require that you complete an initial telephone-based appointment which will take approximately 60-90 minutes of your time. This will be followed by 4-6 weekly phone call sessions that are approximately 20-45 minutes each, depending on which treatment you are assigned to. You will then complete 4 telephone-based follow-up appointments at about 7 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after your first appointment.

Participants will be compensated in Amazon gift cards and given $50 for each of the following study visits: baseline session, post-treatment follow-up, 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month follow-up. They will also be given a $5 bonus for each time they submit their biospecimen samples within one week of their study visit (5 visits =  $25 total). Participants will also be given $5 per completed intervention session ($30 max). If they attend all 4 of their follow-up sessions, they will receive a bonus $50. This results in a total of $355 in Amazon gift cards if a participant commits to the study and all its components for the full year.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
