OCD Research Study

Researchers at Boston University are investigating a potential treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Fast Facts

Ages 18+

Conducted in Boston, MA

Study Background

Do you suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder? The Cognitive & Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory at Boston University is seeking individuals with OCD to participate in a potential treatment study.

Studies involve psychological interviews, neuroimaging (EEG/MRI), and a form of non invasive brain stimulation called transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). In tACS, we apply very weak electrical currents to the scalp to change brain activity in specific regions involved in OCD.

Findings from this study will determine if it is possible to reduce symptoms of OCD with noninvasive brain stimulation. Eligible participants will be asked to complete approximately 12 experimental sessions over the course of two to three months.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to determine if it is possible to reduce symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with noninvasive brain stimulation.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18+
  • Think you have OCD or experiencing OCD symptoms
  • Not in psychotherapy for OCD such as cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic therapy
  • OCD is primary source of distress (as opposed to other mental health conditions)
  • No neurological problems, head injury, or epilepsy
  • Able to do MRI scan (no metal near the head or claustrophobia)
  • If female, not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • No skin sensitivity
  • No history of significant head trauma
  • No bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia
  • No eating disorder
  • No substance dependence other than nicotine in the last 3 months
  • No suicidal ideation
  • No serious medical illness requiring hospitalization in the next year
  • No history of Tourette syndrome
  • No history of a cardiac event

Once enrolled, this study involves:

  • Attending 2-3 experimental sessions
    • Includes clinical interviews, measurement of brain activity using a safe and noninvasive technique called electroencephalography (EEG), brain scanning using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and playing simple computer games
  • Completing approximately 5 experimental sessions
    • We will apply a form of noninvasive brain stimulation called transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)
  • Repeating clinical interviews, EEG, MRI, and computer games over the next few weeks for up to three months

If eligible, participants will be compensated $20 per hour for each of the study sessions.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
