Study Background
Help us learn more about changes in mobility in older adults.
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between pain, mobility, and the brain in adults ages 60+. Participants will attend 11 in-person study visits, with several phone calls throughout the program.
Over the course of this two-year study, we will observe various predictors of mobility decline including:
- Changes in mobility
- Changes in pain burden
- Changes in the shape of tiny tissues in the brain and the patterns of electrical activity they produce

Additional Information
The goal of the study is to explore the relationship between pain, mobility, and the brain in adults ages 60+.
You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 60+
- Have not been diagnosed with any neurological diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s)
- Have no illegal drug use (e.g., opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine)
- No history of substance use dependence
- Live in the community (as opposed to residing in a retirement home or other institutional setting)
- No recent medical event (e.g., fracture, hospitalization)
Participants in this study will complete 11 study visits over two years, with several phone calls throughout the study. Participants can expect each study visit to last approximately 3-5 hours.
- Phase 1: This phase begins immediately following enrollment and consists of the first 4 visits, which will include a health & physical assessment, sensory testing, EEG, X-rays of knees and hips, and optional brain MRI.
- Phase 2: 12 months later, participants will begin the next phase, which consists of the same tests in Phase 1, not including the MRI.
- Phase 3: 12 months later, all measurements from Phase 1 will be repeated.
As a participant, you will receive $20/hour for your time and effort, with total compensation up to $1100.
Additionally, participants may be reimbursed for compensation costs (e.g., Uber, taxi, gas, or mileage or at the UF travel rate if their own car is used). Compensation will be provided at the end of each session. Participants will also be given their own smart device to keep.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
