Study Background
This research study will examine how the environment and things that happen early in children’s lives—even before they are born—affect their development, health, and well-being.
ECHO seeks to learn more about how the environment affects:
- Pregnant people’s and babies’ health before, during, and after pregnancy
- Children’s breathing problems and breathing-related illnesses
- Nutrition, physical activity, risks of becoming overweight, and weight-related illnesses
- Brain development, including the ability to think and understand, social development,
speech, attention, behavior, and emotions - Overall health, the ability to handle life’s stresses, and general life satisfaction
During pregnancy, participants will be seen for study visits:
- Once before 20 weeks gestation
- Once after 28 weeks gestation
After the baby is born, participants and their child will be seen for study visits at:
- 0-5 months
- 6-11 months
- 12-23 months
- 24-35 months
- Once annually from 3-10 years old
During study visits, participants will complete questionnaires, a brief developmental assessment, and we will collect physical measurements like height and weight, as well as biospecimens such as urine, blood, saliva, hair, and stool.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Currently 10-18 weeks pregnant

Planning to deliver at Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA
During pregnancy, participants will be seen for study visits:
- Once before 20 weeks gestation
- Once after 28 weeks gestation
After the baby is born, participants and their child will be seen for study visits at:
- 0-5 months
- 6-11 months
- 12-23 months
- 24-35 months
- Once annually from 3-10 years old

As a participant, you can receive up to $2330 over the course of this study.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
