Study Background

UTHealth Houston is seeking adults with no significant mental health symptoms to participate in one of their research studies about the brain. 

Findings from these studies will help us understand avoidance behaviors, emotional learning, and memory. Depending on the study, we will use fMRI, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), or electroencephalogram (EEG) to understand how we learn to fear, and learn not to fear, certain stimuli. Study Background

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to understand how we learn to fear, and learn not to fear, certain stimuli.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18+
  • No significant mental health symptoms
  • No history of seizures, head injury, or neurological disorders (e.g., tics, tremors, migraine headaches)

We are currently recruiting participants for 3 studies:

  1. Avoidance study, 3 visits:
    • One eligibility assessment (approx. 2hrs)
    • Two fMRI scans (approx. 2hrs each, on two consecutive days)
  2. TMS study, 4 visits:
    • One eligibility assessment (approx. 2hrs)
    • One session of TMS + fMRI (approx. 2hrs)
    • Two fMRI scans (approx. 2hrs each)
  3. EEG study, 3 visits:
    • One eligibility assessment (approx. 2hrs)
    • Two EEG visits, where you will complete an emotional learning and memory task (approx. 1.5hrs each, on two consecutive days)

All studies provide paid compensation (depending on the study, can be up to $150 to $330).

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
