Study Background

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is conducting a study on non-invasive brain stimulation in adults 18-65 who are right handed.

The main purpose of the study is to help us better understand the brain’s response to non-invasive brain stimulation.  The type of brain stimulation that will be used in this study is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Specifically, we want to explore the consistency of brain response to different Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic (rTMS) Stimulation patterns that are widely used in research and in treatment. We will measure your brain’s response to the stimulation using electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG), and assess your performance on behavioral tasks

Additional Information

The purpose of this study is seeking to assess the reliability of the effects of different TMS protocols on brain excitability and cognitive task performance.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18-65
  • No major or unstable medical or psychiatric conditions
  • Right-handed
  • Can be available for visit times of Monday-Friday from 8am-6pm

There are 2 baseline visits, each 4 hours long. These consist of reviewing the consent form, screening questionnaires, neurological exam, psychiatric exam, cognitive testing, blood draw and urine screening, an MRI of the brain, and optional genetic testing.

There are 12 TMS-EEG visits, each 4.5-5 hours long, which will take place over 4-12 months with at least 4 days between visits. The TMS-EEG visits consist of a fingerstick (for male participants) or a blood draw and urine pregnancy screening (for female participants), recording of brain activity (EEG), recording muscle activity (EMG), cognitive tasks, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).

Participants must have availability between Monday through Friday from 8:00am-6:00pm to make visits to the research center. Study visit times and intervals are flexible within this time frame.

Participants be compensated up to $2,000 for the study visits.

$250 after completion of the Baseline through the 2nd TMS-EEG visit

  • $500 after completion of the 6th TMS-EEG visit
  • $500 after completion of the 9th TMS-EEG visit
  • $750 after completion of the 12th TMS-EEG visit
  • $200 dollar bonus will be given if you complete the 6th visit within 5 months of study enrollment.
  • Another $200 bonus will be given if you complete the 12th visit within 9 months of study enrollment. This would increase your maximum possible payment to $2,400.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
