Type 2 Diabetes Research Study
Researchers at Pennington Biomedical Research Center are conducting a study to learn more about the effectiveness of WW, a virtual behavioral weight management program in people with type 2 diabetes.

Conducted in Baton Rouge, LA
Study Background
We want to determine the effectiveness of the WeightWatchers (WW) program, enhanced with continuous glucose monitoring, at reducing HbA1c% in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that approximately 1 in 10 Americans have diabetes, and that over 90% of that population has type 2 diabetes. For these Americans, finding the right balance between a healthy lifestyle and enjoying their favorite foods can be a challenge.
This mostly virtual program will last approximately 12 months, and will include 4 in-person visits to Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA (1 screening visit, 1 baseline visit, and 2 study visits).
Participants will be randomly assigned (assigned by chance like flipping a coin) to one of two virtual study programs:
- Usual Care Group: Participants will be asked to continue their routine medical care, and will receive 1 virtual session with a dietitian or nutrition counselor. At the end of the study, participants in this group will also receive a voucher for 12 months of WW and 1 month of continuous glucose monitor (CGM) devices.
- WW Intervention Group: Participants will be asked to download the WW app for the 12-month weight management program. The program will include Virtual Workshops led by a WW coach, the WW app, and related online community resources. Participants will be asked to wear a CGM throughout the duration of the study.
Measurements at the study visits include height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, a blood sample for HbA1c, surveys, and continuous glucose monitoring.

Additional Information
For the many Americans with type 2 diabetes, finding the right balance between a healthy lifestyle and enjoying their favorite foods can be a challenge. We want to determine the effectiveness of the WeightWatchers (WW) program, enhanced with continuous glucose monitoring, at reducing HbA1c% in patients with type 2 diabetes.
You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
Ages 18-70
Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
Have overweight or obesity
Access to a smartphone that can download the weight watchers app
Willing to wear a continuous glucose monitor for duration of the trial
