PCOS Research Study

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco are conducting a study on individuals diagnosed with or suspected to have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) who are at increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Fast Facts

Females Ages 18-45

Diagnosed or Suspected PCOS

Have Problems with Sleep, Fatigue, or Snoring

Compensation Provided

Conducted in San Francisco, CA

Study Background

The University of California San Fransisco is studying how to restore metabolic and reproductive health with sleep in individuals diagnosed with or suspected to have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Patients experiencing PCOS are at an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but we do not currently understand what drives this risk and the metabolic and reproductive benefits of treating OSA.

The REST-UP study is recruiting patients with or suspected to have PCOS to undergo sleep studies and is providing treatment for those who test positive for OSA. Findings from this research study will help us better understand the relationship between these complex disorders.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to determine whether treating obstructive sleep apnea will restore metabolic and reproductive health in women with PCOS.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Female ages 18-45
  • Diagnosed with or meet criteria for PCOS (i.e., have irregular periods, acne or excess hair growth, polycystic ovaries on ultrasound)
  • Have problems with sleep, fatigue, or snoring and are not being treated for sleep apnea

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Diagnosis of type 1 or 2 diabetes
  • Receiving regular treatment for asthma
  • Regularly using tobacco
  • Drink more than 1 alcoholic drink daily
  • HIV or hepatitis
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Previously treated for obstructive sleep apnea

Participants will initially undergo a sleep study either overnight at UCSF or at home (after being initially fit at UCSF with a polysomnography machine, which provides clinicians with a comprehensive view of the patient’s sleep cycle and identifies any irregularities or issues).

If found to have OSA participants will be seen in clinic twice prior to receiving CPAP treatment and twice after receiving CPAP treatment.

Compensation is provided up to $600 for your participation.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
