Additional Information

This research aims to evaluate how people feel and behave when they stop using e-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes) and to explore any withdrawal symptoms they may experience during this period.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 21-55 years old
  • Daily e-cigarette use
  • No regular use of other tobacco products like cigarettes
  • This study consists of a screening visit, a week long (7 day) inpatient (overnight) stay at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and a follow-up visit.
  • Participants will be asked to not use e-cigarettes during this 7 day period. During the stay, participants will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to receive a nicotine patch, a placebo patch (an inactive substance that looks like the study drug but contains no active drug), or no patch (like “going cold turkey”). During the stay, participants will also be asked to complete questionnaires and computer tasks approximately four times per day.
  • They will also be asked to wear a wrist-watch and headband that record sleep. Once per day, participants will be asked to provide a urine sample that is tested for common ingredients in e-cigarettes and markers of e-cigarette use. Finally, participants will be asked to come back to the laboratory one week after your inpatient stay to complete questionnaires and computer tasks and provide a urine sample.

As a participant, total earnings possible are $1,900. Transportation provided for the residential stay (not for screening).

  • Screening $50
  • Residential Stay $250/day if completed
  • Follow-Up $100

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
