Dementia
Research Study
Many couples live with dementia, and research shows that daily experiences and sleep can affect overall well-being and brain health. However, little is known about how these factors impact both partners over time. This study will examine the daily lives and sleep patterns of couples where one partner has dementia symptoms, with the goal of understanding how these experiences influence health and well-being.

- Lives in Eastern Time Zone within the United States
Overall Duration
This study begins with an initial visit and includes follow-ups one year and two years later, along with brief check-ins at 6 and 18 months.
In-Lab Activities
– Participants will travel to University of Michigan for in-person visits at the start of the study and again at the one- and two-year follow-ups. Each partner will complete a 60-minute cognitive assessment during these visits.
– Participants will also complete a 60-minute phone interview at the start of the study and again at each follow-up. A short video call will be scheduled after the first interview to review study steps.
– Phone interviews, cognitive assessments, and check-in calls will be audio recorded as part of the study.
At-Home Activities
– At home, both partners will take part in 7 consecutive days of activities after the initial interview. Each day, participants will complete 5 short surveys on a smartphone and wear a wrist activity monitor (similar to a watch) to track movement and sleep.
– Participants will also complete two brief check-in phone calls at 6 months and 18 months.
Participants may receive up to $370 each (up to $740 per couple) for their time as they complete different parts of the study. Transportation assistance is available for in-person visits if needed.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
