Research Study
Researchers at Rutgers University are conducting a study to explore whether the medication guanfacine combined with mindfulness therapy can help reduce opioid cravings. This study is for individuals with opioid use disorder who are currently taking buprenorphine or methadone and are interested in improving their recovery outcomes.

This study is being conducted to determine whether guanfacine and mindfulness-based therapy can reduce opioid cravings and help prevent relapse in individuals with opioid use disorder.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Adults with opioid use disorder
- Currently taking buprenorphine or methadone
- Interested in quitting opioid use
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Willing to commit to phone and in-person visits at Rutgers, online surveys, a 6-week program with study medicine and mindfulness, and a follow-up call
- Ages 18-65
- No other substance use disorders
If you choose to participate, you will first complete a phone screening followed by an in-person visit in Newark, NJ to confirm eligibility through medical and psychological assessments.
If eligible, you will:
- Complete baseline questionnaires and cognitive assessments remotely
- Participate in a lab session involving guided imagery and craving assessments
- Be randomly assigned to one of four groups (medication and/or therapy combinations)
- Take either guanfacine or a placebo for 6 weeks
- Attend either support group sessions or mindfulness (MORE) therapy
- Complete twice-weekly remote check-ins to monitor your health and progress
- Return for a final lab session and a follow-up safety visit
You can receive up to $520 for completing all study activities. Payments are provided throughout the study as you complete each visit. Travel reimbursement is also available, and snacks will be provided during in-person lab sessions.
