Additional Information

The goal of these studies is to see whether helping teens feel less stressed can reduce their chances of developing diabetes. Each study will test a different method for lowering stress.

You/your teen may qualify for a study if the following criteria are met.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Teens ages 12-17
  • Have an immediate family member with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or gestational diabetes
  • Sometimes feel stressed or depressed
  • Overweight or obese

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Major medical problems
  • In therapy or weight loss treatment
  • Serious emotional or behavioral problems

MIND study:

  • Two screening visits
  • Tasks to do at home
  • 6-session weekly teen group (after-school hours; about mood/stress or focused on health knowledge; helpful for other teenage girls)
  • Two follow-up visits within 1 year of starting

CBTeX study:

  • Two screening visits
  • Tasks to do at home
  • 12-session weekly teen group (after-school hours; exercise training or cognitive behavioral therapy or both)
  • One mid-point and one follow-up visit at week 6 and week 12 of the study
  • 1-year follow-up visit

Your teen will be compensated up to $505 for their participation.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
