Researchers at Yale University are conducting a research study to better understand how brain activity is related to recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD). This study is for adults who have started or restarted methadone or buprenorphine (suboxone, subutex, sublocade) treatment within the past year and aims to improve future treatments by identifying brain patterns associated with recovery and relapse.

Researchers are studying how patterns of brain activity may be linked to recovery and relapse during treatment for opioid use disorder. Findings from this study may help improve the understanding of the brain mechanisms involved in recovery and support the development of more effective, evidence-based treatments.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Currently using buprenorphine
  • Started or restarted use of buprenorphine in the last year
  • Ages 18-50
  • Not using methadone

If you choose to participate, you will first complete a brief screening session to determine if you are eligible. If you qualify, your participation will include:

  1. A screening visit with interviews and questionnaires about your health, substance use, smoking, and other life experiences.
  2. An MRI (fMRI) brain scan, including a breathalyzer test before the scan.
  3. A phenotyping visit that includes computer-based tasks and assessments.
  4. Urine testing at each in-person study visit.
  5. Six monthly follow-up visits, each lasting about 15 minutes, which can be completed by phone or in person.

Total participation time is approximately 7–8 hours across all study activities.

Participants may receive up to $680 for completing all study activities. Compensation includes $50 for the screening visit, $250 for the MRI session, $100 for the phenotyping visit, and $30 for each of the six monthly follow-up visits. Some participants may also have the opportunity to earn additional incentive-based compensation during one of the computer tasks.

Transportation assistance is available. The study team can arrange Uber or Lyft rides valued up to $25 each way or reimburse eligible transportation expenses, including parking, gas, or public transit, up to $25 each way.
