Additional Information

This study is testing a program to help people who take GLP-1 medications and have a history of kidney stones increase their fluid intake, which may help reduce the risk of future kidney stones.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • History of a kidney stone diagnosis
  • Have obesity (BMI of 30 or higher)
  • Currently taking a GLP-1 medication (such as Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Trulicity, or Rybelsus)
  • Ages 18+
  • Have trouble meeting the recommended 2.5 L (or 84.5 fl. oz) of urine daily
  • Living in the continental US
  • Own a smartphone
  • Willing to participate in a 6-month-long study that involves 4 Zoom meetings and virtual urine collections

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of a cystine kidney stone
  • Currently enrolled in another study involving fluid intake
  • Planning surgery in the next 6 months
  • Any medical condition that restricts fluid intake

Overall Duration

  • This is a 6-month, fully virtual study conducted over Zoom.

What’s Involved

  • An at-home urine collection kit delivered to you for baseline, month 3, and month 6 testing.
  • Blood pressure and weight measurements at each of the 3 study timepoints.
  • Random assignment to one of two hydration-support groups — both eventually receive a smart water bottle and app.
  • Optional interviews about your experience at month 3 and month 6.

No Change to Your Medication

  • Participating does not require you to change or stop any GLP-1 medication you’re currently taking.

Participants may receive up to $150 for completing all study assessments.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
