Study Background

Researchers at the University of Michigan are conducting remote chronic pain research studies in veterans to better understand how cannabis-based products, including CBD, and health coaching interventions may help manage pain.

The MIVetsCan program includes two clinical trials: Can-Coach and CBD-Care. Researchers at the University of Michigan are studying how cannabis-based products and health coaching interventions may help U.S. veterans manage chronic pain. Both studies are conducted remotely, allowing veterans to participate from home.

Chronic pain can affect physical functioning, mood, motivation, and quality of life. These studies aim to explore alternative approaches for veterans whose pain does not improve with traditional treatments and to identify strategies that support healthier long-term outcomes. The findings may help improve chronic pain management and enhance quality of life for veterans.

Eventually, the findings from these studies may help improve chronic pain management approaches and enhance quality of life for veterans.

Additional Information

The MIVetsCan program includes two clinical trials: Can-Coach and CBD-Care. Can-Coach helps U.S. veterans optimize their use of medical cannabis products to manage chronic pain, while CBD-Care tests whether cannabidiol (CBD) can improve chronic pain compared with a placebo.

Chronic pain can affect physical functioning, mood, motivation, and quality of life, and may be related to changes in pain-processing and reward-related brain systems, inflammation, and daily experiences. These studies are being done to explore alternative approaches for veterans whose pain does not improve with traditional treatments and to better understand how chronic pain impacts daily life.

The findings from these studies may help improve chronic pain management approaches and enhance the quality of life for veterans.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • U.S. veteran
  • Experiencing chronic pain lasting 3 or more months
  • Interested in using cannabis and/or cannabidiol (CBD) for pain management
  • Ages 18+
  • Currently residing in a state where cannabis is fully legal

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Recent or new cancer diagnosis in the past three years
  • Known allergies to cannabis, cannabinoids, or sesame oil
  • Plans to move out of a fully legal cannabis state during the study
  • Pregnancy or potential to get others pregnant

The entire study lasts depending on which study you participate in. Once enrolled, the studies involve:

Remote participation:

  • You will complete app-based surveys and digital tracking from home. This includes reporting on your pain symptoms, mood, and daily experiences. You may be asked to complete short surveys multiple times per week. The app also collects activity data through a Fitbit provided to you, but does not access personal content like messages or photos.

Virtual visits:

  • For Can-Coach (about 9 months), you will meet one-on-one with a trained cannabis coach via Zoom or phone to discuss your symptoms and optimize your use of cannabis or CBD products. Sessions will include tracking symptoms, routes of administration, and other factors to help manage your pain effectively.
  • For CBD-Care (8 weeks), participants will complete online surveys and track activity via Fitbit. Participants are randomly assigned to receive CBD or placebo and may have virtual check-ins during the study period.

Participants in both studies may receive compensation and a Fitbit to keep upon completion.

As a participant, you may receive up to $260 for Can-Coach or up to $60 for CBD-Care, and you will also receive a Fitbit to keep.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
