Study Background
Could restoring NAD⁺ levels improve how the brain and blood vessels work as we age?
As we grow older, the levels of a molecule called NAD⁺, crucial for cellular energy, DNA repair, and vascular function, naturally decline. Researchers at the Geroscience Lab at OUHSC are investigating whether a daily supplement of Nicotinamide Riboside (a form of Vitamin B3) can help restore NAD⁺ levels and improve brain activity, blood vessel health, and cognitive performance.
This 8-week study includes two in-person visits with engaging, non-invasive tests. Participants will take either the supplement or a placebo and complete simple brain games, blood tests, and imaging procedures to track potential changes in brain and vascular function.

Additional Information
The goal is to learn whether increasing NAD⁺ levels through Nicotinamide Riboside can improve brain function, blood flow, and overall vascular health in older adults.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Men ages 60-85
- Have not been diagnosed with dementia or cognitive impairment
- Not currently being treated for or have active cancer
- Have not had a stroke within the past 60 days
- Have normal kidney and liver function
- Have not been diagnosed with a central nervous system disease like Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, or a Seizure disorder
You will:
Visit our research site in Oklahoma City twice (once at the beginning and once after 8 weeks).
Take a daily study pill (either Nicotinamide Riboside or a placebo).
Participate in a series of safe, non-invasive tests including:
Playing iPad-based cognitive games
Ultrasound of a forearm blood vessel
Thermal scan of finger temperatures
Imaging blood vessels under the tongue
Brain activity testing with a sensor cap
Blood sample collection
Optional retinal imaging of one dilated eye
Yes. You’ll receive $100 per visit, for a total of $200 if both visits are completed. The study supplement is provided at no cost, and all procedures are non-invasive and well-tolerated.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
