Study Background
Mass General Hospital is studying ways to help teens aged 14–19 quit or reduce vaping.
This study is designed to help teens aged 14–19 who use nicotine products, such as vapes or nicotine pouches, to quit or reduce their use. Nicotine use in teens can lead to addiction and serious health risks, and there are currently few proven ways to help adolescents stop. We are testing a behavioral program called QuitVaping, which includes weekly support sessions and a text-based quitting app, to see how well it helps teens change their vaping habits.
The study will help us understand what strategies work best to support teens in reducing nicotine use, how teens respond to different types of behavioral support, and ways to encourage healthier choices early in life. Ultimately, the findings from this study could lead to better programs to help adolescents quit vaping and improve their long-term health and well-being.

Additional Information
In this research study, we are trying to understand how teens use nicotine products like vapes or pouches and what helps them quit or reduce use. We are testing a behavioral program called QuitVaping, which includes weekly support sessions and a text-based app, to see how different strategies help teens change their vaping habits. We will track vaping behavior, collect surveys, and measure nicotine use through saliva tests to understand how teens respond to the program. The goal is to identify approaches that can effectively support teens in reducing nicotine use and improving their health.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 14–19
- Use nicotine products (vapes or pouches) at least once a week
- Willing to try to quit or reduce vaping in the next 30 days
- Able to understand and read English or Spanish
- If under 18, able to obtain parental passive consent
Exclusion Criteria:
- Regular use of smoked tobacco (5 or more days per week)
- Medical or psychiatric conditions that would make participation unsafe or interfere with study procedures
The entire study lasts about 36 weeks, including a 12-week active treatment period and monthly follow-up visits afterward. Once enrolled, the study involves:
At home / remotely:
You’ll be randomly assigned to either a group that receives weekly behavioral support sessions plus a text-based quitting app, or a group that receives only the text-based quitting app. Weekly behavioral sessions and assessments can be completed virtually via secure video calls.
Surveys and samples:
Throughout the study, you’ll complete regular surveys about vaping, mood, and experiences. You’ll also provide saliva samples to verify nicotine use.
Follow-up:
After the initial 12-week program, you will have monthly follow-up visits up to week 36 to monitor progress and vaping status.
As a participant, you may receive up to $880 for completing all study activities.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
